Quakers
Quakers (officialy known as The Religious Society of Friends
) originated in England during the middle of the
seventeenth century amidst persecution for their beliefs, which at that time
were considered heretical against the established Church of England. Although
Christian in persuasion, the Quakers' social beliers were unorthodox in
comparison to other Christians of that era.
Many of the early Quakers' troubles with the
authorities arose from their uncompromising
stand on social issues of
the time. From the
start Quakers have believed there is 'that of
God' in
each person. This naturally led them
to refuse to violate that godliness by
participating in violent acts towards others.
Thus the Quakers refused to go to war when
ordered
to do so by the crown. Their belief of
'that of God' in each person also led
to the realization that men and women are equal, as are all of the races and
nationalities of humankind. Again, this belief was offensive to the authorities
who refused to grant women and people of color the same rights as white men.
Knowing there is 'that of God' in each person led the Quakers to advocate human
rights for the most rejected persons in society. They focused their attention on
society's treatment of the poor, the imprisoned, and the
oppressed.
Today, Quakers are still very concerned about others who are in need of help. They continue to support and advocate for groups such as the poor, the homeless, Native Americans, people of color, the imprisoned, as well as other groups. Quakers are active in promoting non-violent conflict resolution on a personal level, as well as among groups and nations.
